Waterfall - The classic waterfall software development life-cycle, is perhaps the best understood of all the development life-cycles. Activities are performed sequentially and one activity must be finished before starting the next. The most common sequence being: Analysis, Design, Code and Test. For these reasons, it forms the basis of many contemporary and 'unified' processes.

Staged - Based upon processes such as DSDM (Dynamic Systems Development Method), the system is delivered in discreet usable packets of functionality to the end user. This leads to the customer getting the most important parts of the system more quickly.

Spiral - The spiral development lifecycle uses small iterative, investigative steps at the start of the project to evaluate the problem and the effectiveness of solutions. Risk analysis is a big part of the spiral lifecycle and as the project become better defined and risks are removed the project may use the waterfall lifecycle to finish it off.
