What is a Java Applet? A Java Applet is a bytecode based Java component that runs in the Web browser to give user interaction capabilities to a Java based Web application or to extend the functionality of a basic HTML Web page. These Java Applets or browser applets are downloaded to the client machine at run-time by the Web browser and run inside a sandbox in the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for safety and security reasons.

This approach prevents the Java Applet from having access to data located on the local client machine that it is running on. To speed up the download times for Java Applets, they are typically compressed using ZIP compression techniques and have a JAR file extension, so they are sometimes referred to as Applet JARs or as an Applet JAR download.
