What is a Java Servlet? A Java Servlet is a Java object or Java Class that allows a Java developer to insert content into JSP Web pages at run-time. The Servlet uses the Java Servlet API to enable it to reply to HTTP requests from a Web server and so can create Web page content on the fly or dynamically. Servlets are typically created by JavaServer Pages (JSPs) and run on the server, inside servlet containers provided by the Web application server, such as: BEA WebLogic, IBM WebSphere and Apache Tomcat, sometimes called a Tomcat Servlet.

The Java Servlet and Java Servlet API is part of the Java Platform Enterprise Edition (Java EE) and is used to extend the functionality of the server in a component based manner.
