PhoneJS is a HTML5/JavaScript framework for smartphones and tablets. PHFE WIC improves mobile experience

Alternate smartphone version of the education website was created with 51Degrees.mobi tools.

PHFE WIC (Public Health Foundation Enterprises - WIC Program) is a US Federally funded program to help provide supplemental food, health care referrals and nutritional education to low income families in the LA, California area.

Challenges
To provide participants with printed healthy food vouchers, PHFE is required to give participants free nutritional education. PHFE currently offer this education in multiple formats, one being their online website. Using 51Degrees.mobi device detection data, PHFE found that over 40% of their users were accessing the education website via a mobile. This led Mike Whaley (IT Director, PHFE WIC) to optimise the PHFE website to accommodate mobile users, and to increase the amount of participants finishing the online questionnaires.

Solution
Mike created an alternate smartphone version of the education website and used 51Degrees.mobi Device Detection to redirect users who were accessing the website via a mobile device. 51Degrees.mobi's mobile optimisation tool (Framework) was used to reduce page weight to accommodate limited, low cost data plans.

Results
Using 51Degrees.mobi, Mike has been able to capture response time and bandwidth after each education module, and has managed to reduce total page weight to around 40kb. Within a week of 51Degrees.mobi Framework being implemented, 23% more people were completing the education questionnaires online, equating to an extra 50 participants a day. Mike concludes "The compression in your product is working amazingly well and the modules are fast and responsive. This is already faster and easier to use than the big screen version of the education website and is a game changer for us."

The whitepaper provides an insight into current web usage trends by mobile devices with analysis based on results obtained from the 51Degrees.mobi Mobile Analytics product.

51Degrees.mobi receives real-world internet usage data from more than 240,000 servers using their products to detect the capabilities of devices accessing a web site and optimise the response. Known as server side responsive design or RESS the technique is an increasingly popular method for web sites to provide an optimized user experience to an ever growing variety of devices.

The number of tablet devices accessing websites is rising.

A snapshot of the information included in the white paper regards the rise of tablets. Within one year of the iPad launch, Q2 2010 through Q1 2011, tablet visits represented 1% of total website visits. One year later tablets now represent 4.7% of total usage in Europe.

In the EU5, comprised of France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, the results from September 2012 indicate mobile phones account for over 12% of the visits to mobile-aware websites. Tablets and mobile phones combined represented more than 17% of total usage. Figures for the United States are similar.
