EPUB 2.x support - EPUB (electronic publication) is an open standard for creating and distributing digital publications such as e-books. The files that are encapsulated in the EPUB file are zipped, so EBUB docs open in the XMLSpy Archive View.
ZIP and OOXML support (Professional Edition) - Allow users to access data in zipped files such as Microsoft Office documents, which, in versions 2007 and higher, is saved in Open Office XML (OOXML) format.
Support for logical files in IBM iSeries databases - XMLSpy now includes support for logical files specific to IBM iSeries databases.
Ability to escape/unescape XML characters - Sometimes it's necessary to escape characters normally parsed as part of XML code to include them as text in an XML document. Now, it's very simple to do by highlighting the XML in Text View and using the right-click context menu to escape the characters.

Updates in 2012

Streaming reading for large files - MapForce 2012 includes new streaming reading functionality for large XML, CSV, and FLF (fixed length format) files and databases. This enhanced read feature is equivalent to the direct file output feature introduced in v2011r2. Now the MapForce built-in execution engine can read arbitrarily long input sources and create correspondingly large output streams. Users no longer have to split extremely large XML, CSV, or FLF input files into chunks for processing, and MapForce can even theoretically read an entire relational database in one pass and generate an XML or other output file in a single pass. This is an important feature for extremely large ETL (Extract/Transform/Load) applications. MapForce already has included streaming output capabilities in recent releases and the streaming input capabilities allow MapForce to perform the most demanding ETL tasks.
New parse-date and parse-time functions - Users must produce a tremendous variety of representations of date and time in data transformation projects. Sometimes an input data stream includes a value that represents only the date or only the time. These two new functions make it easier to process these formats than the existing parse-dateTime function.
Visual alignment guides - Complex data mappings with many components and functions can appear very cluttered on the screen. MapForce 2012 introduces new horizontal and vertical alignment guides to help users organize a mapping as they drag elements into place.
JDBC database driver support - Now, in addition to ODBC and ADO drivers, MapForce 2012 supports JDBC database drivers for database connectivity. When the user clicks the Insert Database toolbar icon or menu selection, the database connection dialog now includes a selection for JDBC drivers.
New Java API - The same features of the new Java API described above in the XMLSpy section are available in MapForce 2012, allowing Java developers to directly manipulate MapForce functionality via the Java API. New API examples for all programming languages demonstrate API functionality much more extensively than previous versions.
Search in Project window - Also as described above in the XMLSpy section, search functionality has been added to the Project window in MapForce 2012. This means users can find files contained in large, complex MapForce projects more easily.

HTML5 support
HTML5 is the latest version of the language for presenting information on Web pages. Version 5 includes numerous improvements that are driving its rapid adoption, including the addition of new elements that make it easier to present multimedia content such as video, audio, dynamic images, and so on, in a standardized way (i.e., without requiring separate software). This helps improve interoperability of Web pages - and Web-based apps - while increasing their sophistication. At the same time, it makes creating rich content for multiple browsers and platforms much simpler for the developer.

XMLSpy has long supported HTML4 and XHTML editing, and even includes an intelligent CSS editor. Now, with Version 2012, XMLSpy introduces intelligent support for editing HTML5 code (and CSS3 stylesheets).

It's easy to write code in the XMLSpy HTML5 editor, which provides context sensitive editing help in both static entry helper windows and drop-down menus that offer allowed element and attribute choices as you type. Code completion also helps speed editing and ensure closed elements.

CSS3 support
The XMLSpy CSS editor now supports CSS3 in addition to CSS2.1. Syntax coloring, context-sensitive entry helper windows and drop-down menus, screen tips, and more assist developers with writing CSS code to style their HTML pages. Similar to working in the HTML editor, you can opt to view your CSS code and resulting HTML page side-by-side as you edit.

JDBC database driver support
As with other database-enabled MissionKit tools, XMLSpy 2012 supports JDBC drivers in addition to existing ODBC and ADO options. JDBC connections are easily configured in the Database Connection Wizard.

Java API
In addition to the existing COM API, XMLSpy 2011 includes a new, native Java API, giving Java developers an easy way to automate XMLSpy and integrate its functionality in their applications. This adds more flexible options for developers to efficiently access XMLSpy functionality from their preferred platform.

Updates in 2011

Chained transformations
Chained transformations enable users to create complex mappings in which the output of one mapping becomes the input of another. This is a feature that adds to MapForce's ability to execute fully automated transformations. Each chained component becomes a modular entity in an interdependent transformation sequence, allowing for conversions to be made on-the-fly. MapForce users can create chained transformations using any number of mapping components connected to a final target component. Preview and code generation features can be displayed/generated for intermediate components, as well as for the final mapping result. Intermediate mapping components will also now have a "pass-through" button in the title bar. This button will enable users to define the set of data that gets passed on to the following component.
Integration with StyleVision for output components
Integration with StyleVision lets MapForce users automatically render results of their XML and XBRL mappings using an associated StyleVision template design. This means that these components can be previewed as HTML, RTF, PDF, or Word 2007+ documents. This feature for MapForce essentially combines its capabilities with those of StyleVision, meaning that users can now automate report generation from virtually any data format - as long as it can be mapped to an XML Schema or XBRL taxonomy.
Formatting of numbers, dates, and times
One of the most frequently requested features, this enables MapForce users to easily convert numbers, dates, and times to their string representations using a variety of different formatting functions. For example, the simple format-number function below converts a numerical input (e.g., 12345) to a monetary one in with a USD prefix, comma separating the thousands digits, and two decimal places (e.g., $12,345.00).
Two new parameters in auto-number function
The auto-number generator function in MapForce has been updated to include two additional parameters, global-id and restart-on-change, adding to the ways in which you can manipulate data between source and target format(s). Global-id assigns a global identifier to an auto-number sequence, making it accessible throughout the data mapping project, including in user-defined functions. Restart-on-change allows users to restart auto-numbering every time the value supplied this parameter changes, enabling them to create intelligent numbering sequences.
Functions for working with timezones
Two new functions have been added to the MapForce function library to handle mappings that involve timezones. "convert-to-utc" will change time or datetime to a UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) or GMT value, while "remove-timezone" will simply strip the timezone information from a time or datetime conversion.
Extended support for UN/EDIFACT
Support for the EDIFACT international EDI standard has been extended to include 08B, 09A, and 09B messages.
Extended support for ANSI/X12
Support for the X12, the official national EDI standard of the United States of America, has been extended to include the 6010 and 6020 transaction sets.

Chart creation (Enterprise only)
Chart creation in XMLSpy 2011 brings a whole new dimension to working with XML data. XMLSpy 2011 makes it easy to create eye-catching, compelling charts for displaying XML data. Now you can visualize and analyze numerical XML data - and XBRL data - directly inside XMLSpy with just a few clicks. No more exporting to Excel. The following types of charts are available: 2D & 3D pie charts, 2D & 3D bar charts, category line graphs, value line graphs and gauge charts. You can create up to nine different charts on the available tabs in the Output Window, and you can save each as a custom-sized image file with just a click or print it directly from XMLSpy. You can also copy it to your clipboard to paste it in another application, such as Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. What's more, you can copy the XSLT or XQuery code to create the chart to the clipboard for use in your own stylesheet or application.
Validation of SOAP against WSDL (Enterprise only)
This new feature will be very useful for Web services developers, as it allows them to ensure their SOAP messages are valid against the SOAP specification as well as any XML Schemas referenced in the corresponding WSDL definition.
Schema flattener (Enterprise and Professional only)
The new Schema Flattener in XMLSpy 2011 allows schema designers to write all the dependent files that are included in a schema into one file. This way, you can use the flattened schema without having to rely on a network connection to access the required files. This could be especially important when shipping a schema within an application.
Creation of schema from subset (Enterprise and Professional only)
In addition to flattening schemas, XMLSpy 2011 allows you to create a schema from a subset of a larger schema. Many schemas are quite large and contain more types and elements than are required for a particular application or information exchange. Furthermore, the larger a schema is, the longer loading and validation may take. The ability to create a new schema from a subset means a developer can select some global elements or types from a large schema to create a smaller one, using just the elements required. This feature is especially useful for working with NIEM information exchanges, but has also been requested by other users for a variety of applications.

Professional and Enterprise editions now integrate with Visual Studio 2010 and support 64-bit code generation in C++.

Altova MapForce is a graphical XML data mapping tool for converting XML data in one format to any another XML format. Using the Altova MapForce visual interface, you simply draw data mappings between XML Schemas and add data processing rules, and MapForce converts the data instantly. Altova MapForce also auto-generates royalty-free XSLT 1.0 or 2.0 transformation code for use in recurrent conversions.

MSXML6 support in C++ (Professional and Enterprise editions only)
MapForce has upgraded its C++ code generator from MSXML4 to MSXML6, the latest Microsoft release that is shipped with Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows XP Service Pack 3. This adds to the quality of C++ code generated from MapForce mappings, making it less likely to require any modifications before being integrated into other applications or reused for recurrent transformations.
64-bit code generation in C++ (Professional and Enterprise editions only)
MapForce is now able to generate C++ build configurations for 64-bit applications. As the number of 64-bit environments on the market steadily increases, this will slowly become a necessity for any generated or hand written code.
Support for xsi:nil in XML Schema (all editions)
The xsi:nil attribute, or "nillable attribute", in indicates that an element is present in the XML, but that it has no value, and therefore no content is associated with it. This is used to override the element type defined in XML Schema in cases when no element data is provided or necessary. MapForce is now able to execute mappings where this attribute is used.
Support for mapping field names (headers) in Excel 2007+ (Enterprise edition only)
This is a time saving feature for Excel 2007+ mappings. This feature can be used in two different ways: When mapping to an Excel 2007 target, users can automatically populate the headings of their output files with column annotations given in the Select range of cells dialog (shown below). When mapping from an Excel 2007 source file, MapForce will use the first row data as column annotations
Ability to preserve value formatting in XML output (all editions)
Until now, MapForce was unable to preserve value formatting when outputting to an XML file because of the internal mechanism that was used for mapping validation. It is now possible to turn this functionality off, ensuring that formatting is maintained from source to target. This is especially useful for scenarios using number values like 001, for example, when it is important to keep the configuration as dictated in the source file rather than stripping off the zeros.
Support for SAP IDoc (Enterprise edition only)
IDoc is a standard data structure for EDI within SAP business systems or between one SAP application and an external program. MapForce now supports mapping the IDoc format in the same way it supports conversion based on other EDI formats (X12, EDIFACT, and HL7). In the case of IDoc, however, the user will need to supply the configuration file that defines the format of the data.

MapForce now integrates with the newest release of Visual Studio, Visual Studio 2010.

Ability to validate naming and coding conventions (extended schema validation) (Enterprise edition only)
The XMLSpy graphical XML Schema editor now lets schema designers validate naming and coding conventions outside of the capabilities of the XML Schema standard.Naming conventions refer to the guidelines for what element/attribute tags are called (i.e. <element>). XML Schema already provides a number of built-in naming allowances and constraints, for example, names cannot start with a numbers, punctuation, or "xml". This feature lets schema developers validate additional rule definitions like all lower case letters, etc. Coding conventions refer to more complex rules for the way in which the schema is written and lets developers narrow the scope of the XML Schema recommendation to align with internal best practices. For example, XML Schema allows for anonymous type definitions, in which types are implicitly defined. While this practice can save time and space in larger schemas, some organizations may choose to restrict its use to promote the portability and longevity of the schema.
User-defined sample values for XML instance generation (Professional and Enterprise editions only)
This feature enables users to add sample data to their example XML instance generations so that they will contain arbitrary results, selected from pre-supplied values. Customers can use the Samples tab in the Facets entry helper window of the graphical schema editor to choose to have this data populate their sample instance randomly, by cycling through, or by using only the first entry in the list. This is a very important feature for anyone who wants to control the sample data that they publish.
