Software Tagging Support (Enterprise, Professional and Standard Editions)

• AdminStudio 11 now includes ISO 19770-2 tagging as standard, which enables a more efficient software asset management and license optimization process. The ISO tag file contains accurate descriptive information on the application (publisher, name, version, etc.) and simplifies the software asset management task by enabling the collection and analysis of the tags to provide an accurate picture of application inventory.

Facilitating Migration to Microsoft's Configuration Manager 2012 (Enterprise and Professional Edition only)

• AdminStudio 11 provides import functionality to help speed your migration to Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2012.  Bulk import eliminates the laborious task of importing applications manually one at a time.

New “Application-Centric” Organization Model in Application Manager
In previous releases of Application Manager, you could import multiple package deployment types into the Application Catalog (such as Windows Installer files, App-V packages, ThinApp packages, Citrix profiles). However, each of these deployment types—even those from the same parent application—were listed separately in the Application Manager tree structure. The only way to group an application's various deployment types together was to create a group and manually organize them. In AdminStudio 10.0, Application Manager now uses an "application-centric" model, with the Application Manager tree restructured to display multiple deployment formats under a parent Application node. The restructured Application Manager provides the same full functionality as previous versions:

• Automatic Application node creation—An Application node will be created automatically each time a package is imported into the Application Catalog, or the user can manually create one in any Application Manager group.
• Unique subnodes and context menus—The Application node, as well as the various Deployment Type nodes, have unique subnodes and context menus appropriate for that type.
• Software repository functionality—All software repository functionality (such as check-in, check-out) is available for each of the deployment types.

Advanced Reports and Dashboards
AdminStudio 10.0 provides an enhanced reporting infrastructure. AdminStudio has incorporated Microsoft SQL Reporting Services to provide a summary dashboard of Application Catalog readiness data and to enable you to create customizable reports.

Application Readiness Dashboard
AdminStudio now uses Microsoft SQL Reporting Services to generate an Application Readiness Dashboard. This dashboard report provides a snapshot of the current status of packages in your Application Catalog including deployment type breakdown, virtualization readiness, and package quality and conflict testing summary information. You can click on any chart to open more detailed reports.The Application Readiness Dashboard includes the following information:

• Deployment Type Breakdown—Provides a graph listing the percentage of packages in the Application Catalog by deployment type (Windows Installer, App-V, XenApp, ThinApp, or Legacy).
• Error Category Breakdown—Shows the number of AdminStudio Best Practices and Conflict errors that have been identified in Windows Installer and App-V packages, by category.
• Virtualization Readiness—Shows a summary of the virtualization status of packages in the Application Catalog, identifying packages as being Ready for Virtualization, Not Suitable for Virtualization, Already Virtualized, or Not Tested.
• Windows Installer/App-V Package Quality—Shows the Microsoft Validation status of Windows Installer packages, and the AdminStudio Best Practices test status of Windows Installer and App-V packages.
• Windows Installer/App-V Package Conflicts—Shows the AdminStudio Conflict test status of Windows Installer and App-V packages.

Customizable Reports
In AdminStudio 10.0, you can create your own XML-driven custom reports that are generated using Microsoft SQL Reporting Services. To create a custom report, you just need to create an XML file in which you specify the RDLC file, the data source, and the parameters that are required for the drill through reports.

Distributing Packages to Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager
In previous releases of AdminStudio, you could use the Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager Web Console, a Web-based application, to configure package distribution options and distribute setup packages without going to Configuration Manager Server.In AdminStudio 10.0, you can publish Windows Installer and App-V packages to Configuration Manager Server directly from the Distribution Wizard client tool.

Citrix XenApp 6 Support
You can use AdminStudio to create Citrix profiles for deployment on Citrix XenApp. AdminStudio 10.0 now supports Citrix XenApp 6.

InstallShield 2011
AdminStudio 10.0 includes InstallShield 2011, which offers many new features and enhancements that will help you use the latest technologies and save time on everyday tasks. New features include:

• Integration with Team Foundation Server—If you use Team Foundation Server, you can now take advantage of the new tight integration with InstallShield as you develop, maintain, build, test, and deploy your products and their installations.
• Custom source locations for prerequisites—You can now specify custom source locations for InstallShield prerequisites. This flexibility enables you to easily add to your projects InstallShield prerequisites that are stored in source code control and to share a common set of prerequisites across multiple machines.
• Emphasize your brand—You can now specify a custom icon and custom version resource properties for setup.exe and update.exe.
• Streamline build process—You can now streamline your build process by specifying commands that run before, during, and after builds.
• 64-bit support—Several new advancements in InstallShield 2011 make it easier for you to create 64-bit installations or 64-bit App-V packages.
• Standalone Build tool—InstallShield 2011 includes a command-line Standalone Build tool that enables you to install on build machines only the part of InstallShield that builds the installations, plus any redistributables that you want to include. The Standalone Build is now included with the Professional and Premier editions of InstallShield.

AdminStudio 9.5 Expands Support for Windows 7 Migrations - AdminStudio 9.5 brings advancements to AdminStudio Windows 7 support. AdminStudio 9.5 includes better capture of installations for a Windows 7 OS, including enhanced exclusion lists. The AdminStudio Repackager is vital for converting legacy installations (such as EXEs or Wise installers) into standard Windows Installer packages.  For Windows 7 projects, the AdminStudio Repackager is important for converting older packages into MSIs that will run on Windows 7 and for new applications, creating packages that will run on Windows 7. AdminStudio helps ensure Windows 7 application compatibility, repackages applications with the flexibility to support many deployment formats, hands off completed packages to popular deployment systems for distribution, and manages a repeatable process.  AdminStudio 9.5 also incorporates MSI 5.0, which many organizations will use as a standard for Windows 7 migration.

AdminStudio 9.5 Accelerates Application Virtualization Migrations - AdminStudio can prepare those applications for deployment on today’s leading application virtualization systems. AdminStudio 9.5 supports the latest releases of the leading application virtualization products: Microsoft App-V 4.6 and VMware ThinApp 4.0.3. General enhancements to the AdminStudio 9.5 support for application virtualization migrations also include easier packaging of traditionally challenging applications, such as Adobe Creative Suite 3 and 4. AdminStudio is able to create a standard, repeatable process for creating virtual packages of applications that are oftentimes challenging to prepare using the native Microsoft App-V Sequencer. Because AdminStudio automatically looks for all of the required information about an installation, there aren’t any valuable steps left out in preparing the application for virtual deployment.

AdminStudio 9.5 powered by InstallShield 2010 - AdminStudio is now powered by InstallShield 2010. InstallShield is a solution for authoring high-quality Windows Installer and InstallScript installations, plus App-V software packages. InstallShield 2010, the basis for the AdminStudio Editor, brings support for Windows 7 and App-V installations as well as MSI 5.

What’s new in AdminStudio V9.0?

• “Pre-Conversion” Scan for application virtualization - AdminStudio saves packagers time and effort in determining what packages might be good candidates for virtualization. AdminStudio 9.0 includes a “pre-conversion scan” feature that intelligently reads a pre-existing MSI package, application file share directory or batch of application file share directories containing an organization’s existing MSI packages to determine which are viable virtualization candidates. This determination is based on application virtualization best practices established by Acresso with input from customers and industry virtualization leaders.
• Repackager Refresh - AdminStudio’s Repackager functionality, which repackages and converts legacy setups to Windows Installer (MSI) formats, is now slightly redesigned. The change includes an enhancement in the capabilities: Repackager can now support MSI Capture, including context data for a more complete capture. Including the context data not only provides complete information to the packager for decision making, but it also more readily enables AdminStudio to be able to repackage applications that had been previously challenging, such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Reader. Seeing the complete context data is especially helpful when virtualizing existing vendor MSI packages.
• Virtual Application Management - AdminStudio 9.0 builds on previous AdminStudio virtualization capabilities. In AdminStudio 9.0, the Software Repository, which in past versions had just stored MSI packages, is updated to now house virtual applications as well as traditional MSI data. Instead of spreadsheets, whiteboards or guesses that system administrators previously used to track the status of virtual and traditional applications for packaging teams, AdminStudio’s Software Repository now provides a single, clear GUI to display all of the information in one location.
• Virtual Application Suiting - Previously virtual applications were isolated and no “talking” occurred. This was one of the limitations hindering a more widespread adoption of Application Virtualization - the fact that the isolated applications had a hard time working together (lack of interoperability). Although limited communication capabilities are now becoming more available from the leading virtualization vendors, AdminStudio 9.0 addresses the major market need and will now allow a packager to place several applications in a single container (location) to ensure that they are able to function properly within their end user’s environments.  This will solve the isolated “interoperability” issue that most virtual applications have today. In allowing for this “suiting” capability, AdminStudio is addressing one of the most prevalent hurdles that has been slowing the adoption of application virtualization, regardless of the vendor technology.
• Enhanced API Support & Conflict Solving API exposed in Workflow Manager - Enhanced API support in AdminStudio 9.0 allows customers to programmatically create application requests without having to go through the manual process each time.  The enhanced API support means customers can more readily integrate AdminStudio into their internal helpdesk submission forms, such as those from their Remedy® or Peregrine® help desk systems, eliminating the tedious process of recreating or re-entering information and instead taking advantage of local solutions.
• Exposing the Conflict Solving API from within Workflow Manager simplifies processes for customers.  With the exposed API, entire processes can be managed within Workflow Manager as part of the application preparation process without having to go back into AdminStudio. This saves the packager time, bandwidth and energy in completing the intended task.
• Repackager Support for Double Byte Character Systems - Properly presenting doublebyte characters, such as Japanese, Korean or Arabic, is becoming increasingly important to worldwide organizations and AdminStudio’s Asia-Pacific based customers. The AdminStudio Repackager is now enhanced to ensure that the Repackager will perform as desired in a double-byte character system.
• Citrix 4.5.1 Virtualization Engine - With their acquisition of XenSource technology, Citrix enhanced the application virtualization engine in the product AdminStudio previously supported, which was named Citrix Presentation Server and is now named Citrix XenApp. AdminStudio 9.0 includes support for the latest version of the Citrix application virtualization engine, which is slightly redesigned from the previous Citrix release.
• InstallShield 2009 functionality - AdminStudio 9.0 now includes the features of the InstallShield 2009 release, which is an integral part of the AdminStudio Editor, used to modify MSI for local customizations before repackaging.
• Patch File Import Wizard -Previous editions of AdminStudio include Patch Impact Manager, functionality to help packagers test and manage Microsoft patches (that are released one Tuesday a month). When Microsoft released Windows Vista, they discontinued the previous XML patch format that had been supported by the AdminStudio Patch Impact Manager.  With Vista, enterprises are still concerned about what type of impact a patch will have on their organization’s environment.  With the new Import capability, they will be able to pull down the new patch (outside of AdminStudio), and import it into their catalog using the AdminStudio Wizard or a Command Line Interface. This ensures AdminStudio is still a valid and key tool for testing patches before they are deployed to the organization and keeps AdminStudio aligned with new Microsoft technology.

What’s new in AdminStudio V8.6?

Enterprise - AdminStudio 8.6 introduces a new tier for the product, aimed to support the market growth in virtualization. The AdminStudio Virtualization Pack contains the support for application packaging features for Citrix Presentation Server (4.5 Enterprise & Platinum editions) and Thinstall 3.2 Virtualization Suite. They are no longer available in the AdminStudio Enterprise Edition starting with AdminStudio 8.6. The AdminStudio Virtualization Pack is only available to customers who are already using Enterprise Edition or those who upgrade to Enterprise Edition. Silver maintenance is a requirement for purchase when the Virtualization Pack is purchased.

Enterprise, Professional and Standard - In previous releases, because the AdminStudio and InstallShield installations were merged together, you were unable to apply updates or hot fixes to InstallShield Editor. To obtain new InstallShield Editor features, you had to wait until the next AdminStudio release. In AdminStudio 8.6, the installation of InstallShield has been separated from the AdminStudio installation. Therefore, you now have the ability to install new InstallShield features and fixes as soon as they are available.
