DatabaseSpy 2008, Altova's multi-database management, query, and design tool, includes many important planned and frequently requested enhancements, all of which add up to creating a huge increase in functionality.

New features in DatabaseSpy 2008 include:

• Creating and editing database views - allows users to create virtual tables from the result sets of database queries, thus organizing data in a convenient and customized manner
• Support for Stored Procedures - allows users to examine, create, edit, and execute stored procedures in the SQL Editor
• Database content editing - enables users to retrieve and edit the content of existing database tables, add new rows to insert data, or delete entire rows in all supported databases
• New Data Inspector window - allows users to preview large XML and text fields in databases
• Enhanced SQL auto-completion capability - provides customizable, context-sensitive entry-helpers for auto-completion of SQL statements
• Editing indexes and constraints in the Design Editor

What's new in DatabaseSpy 2007 Release 3?

• Database browser XML support – XML Schemas registered in XML-enabled databases are now displayed in DatabaseSpy’s online browser database tree in hierarchical form (only for IBM DB2 9 in this release). Table columns that contain XML data are also shown in the database tree, and the online browser indicates any XML Schemas used to validate them. Additionally, XML Schemas shown in DatabaseSpy can now be sent directly to XMLSpy for editing in its schema design view
• Design editor XML enhancements – New columns containing XML data can now be added to database tables via the DatabaseSpy design editor (exclusively for IBM DB2 9 in this release). v2007r3 also provides detailed access to properties of XML datatypes stored in any XML-enabled database
• Customization of SQL auto-completion suggestions – DatabaseSpy 2007r3 lets users modify its auto-completion suggestion menu to create a customized list. This speeds SQL editing by keeping auto-completion pop-up lists to a manageable size, while offering only the suggestions individual users prefer

Altova DatabaseSpy™ is designed to be the database professional’s multi-purpose tool, since it connects to all of the following database types:

• MySQL 4.x and 5.x
• Sybase 11

In fact, DatabaseSpy™ is designed to work with any database that uses an ADO or ODBC connection.

Once you have connected to a database, Altova DatabaseSpy™ lets you browse data or examine the database structure. You can select any table and retrieve all rows or select just a sample to inspect the table structure. You can even open multiple databases of different types at the same time to analyze their contents.

Simplify SQL Development

DatabaseSpy™ includes a built-in SQL Editor with auto-completion, syntax checking, color coding, and drag and drop editing to make generation of SQL statements faster, easier, and more accurate. The SQL Preview function lets you test single SQL statements or complex SQL scripts and see the results without risking permanent changes to your databases. DatabaseSpy™ also features a graphical Database Design Editor that permits visual design and creation of the structure of a database without the need for any knowledge of SQL syntax. You can drag and drop existing database tables into the Design Editor to modify them, or you can construct brand new tables from scratch. DatabaseSpy™ makes it convenient to organize database connections, SQL files, design files, and favorites into projects for easy management. Projects are organized into files and saved for quick reloading and reuse.

Databases to XML and other export and import options

DatabaseSpy™ includes export and import functionality that lets you export database data to any of five different file formats: XML, XML Structure, CSV, HTML, and Excel, and import database data from CSV files.

DatabaseSpy™ has special features to help database professionals migrate existing database content for use in XML-based applications. Besides exporting databases to XML files, DatabaseSpy™ lets you export database tables directly into Altova XMLSpy. You can then use all the advanced features of XMLSpy to accelerate your multi-faceted development project.

Third-party applications such as accounting software packages and other business tools often contain underlying databases but do not provide full-featured database access or functionality. Altova DatabaseSpy™ can give a progressive user access to the underlying database to better understand the application, or to drill into the data to perform maintenance tasks that would otherwise be cumbersome if not impossible.

As you might expect, DatabaseSpy™ connects to your relational databases via existing user names and passwords, so functionality for a given user is dependent on the privileges configured for that user’s particular database account. A read-only user can employ DatabaseSpy™ simply to view, locate, and sort data. A database administrator with a fully-authorized user ID, on the other hand, can use DatabaseSpy™ to modify existing database tables and their relationships, or design, create, and populate a new relational database from scratch.

Support

Altova provides free technical support for all customers for 30 days after the date of purchase.

If you wish to receive priority technical support beyond that date and receive software updates throughout the year, you need to purchase a "Support and Maintenance Package (SMP)" for your software. The Support & Maintenance Package is available in a one- or two-year plan. Please note that you can only add Support and Maintenance Package (SMP) to a product at the time you purchase the license (or up to 30 Days after you purchase).

Services included:

Priority Technical Support - Priority Technical Support is provided via a Web-based support form. Altova will respond within 1-2 business days during European or US business hours (MO-FR, 8am UTC - 10pm UTC, Austrian and US holidays excluded).

Free Minor & Major Versions - You will receive all maintenance releases and major software versions that are released during your Support Period. Updates that you receive cover the specific edition of the product that you have purchased and typically include many additional features.

Maintenance - During the Support Period you may also report any software problem or error to Altova using the same support process described above. If Altova determines that a reported reproducible material error in the software exists and significantly impairs the usability and utility of the software, Altova agrees to use reasonable commercial efforts to correct or provide a usable work-around solution in an upcoming maintenance release or update, which is made available at certain times at Altova's sole discretion.

Support Period

The Support & Maintenance Package that is currently offered with Altova products covers the product for which it is being purchased for a period of either one or two years. The support period begins on the day you purchase the product license and extends for a period of exactly 12 or 24 months, depending on whether you purchase the one- or two-year option. SMP may be purchased at the time you purchase a product license and during the 30 day period immediately thereafter. You may also renew an existing SMP for an additional one- or two-year period. During the Support Period, you will receive Support & Maintenance services from Altova as defined in section "6. SUPPORT & MAINTENANCE" in the Altova end-user license agreement ("EULA") or in the SMP Terms of Use, as applicable.
