AppMetrics(R) provides visibility into the COM + 'black box'. It is designed for use in development, QA test and production environments and can link into existing Infrastructure Management software.
It has three primary sets of capabilities:
- Problem-diagnosis features for troubleshooting bottlenecks including: Application diagnostic features (Resource use, Crashes); Component diagnostic features (which components have active transactions and methods); Tools for deep tracing of activity through your business components
- Early-warning capabilities for detecting and handling errors when something goes wrong, through: Notification when transactions exceed thresholds (Aborts happen too frequently, Volume is too high, or Duration is too long); Notification when Application resource use exceeds thresholds; Notification when components hang or don't complete within preset limits; Scripts that can be invoked in response to notifications and can resolve common application problems
- Production reporting features for gathering trend data: Top Ten Transactions; Top Ten Components; Application resource use over time; Transaction performance over time (Rate, Duration, DTC participation); Method performance over time (Count, Duration)
It is non-invasive, using the COM+ eventing system to collect the data and its own complex correlation engine to make sense of it all. It works in an operational and/or diagnostics mode, collecting, manipulating and coordinating fine grain detail about the flow of transactions through each component and method in the middle tier of your application. It is designed for the serious user, who is responsible for a mission critical business application.
