Each month we update our statistics with the latest information on the number of people in our database, customer count, number of resellers or dealers that we have in our distribution network etc. This month is no different as we passed the 950,000 registered users in our database of developers and IT professionals. We will reach the 1,000,000 figure sometime in 2009... which will be a significant milestone. So how big does this mean the potential global market is for you? We have all heard figures of 4,000,000 developers using .NET/COM focused development tools and a similar figure for Java developers, but are there really 8,000,000 software developers in the world interested in buying your products? We would suggest that the number of people interested in buying products maybe more like 400,000 to 500,000, which is very different to 4,000,000. Be careful what assumptions you make on selling 10,000s of licenses for your products each year - it will probably not be like that - so your prices have to be much higher than you might expect. In general it is very difficult to make up for low license prices with volume - unless you have a massive marketing budget to spend on driving interest and demand. If you keep up to date with our statistics each month, maybe this can help you to create a more accurate business plan or forecast. Hot products and trends continue to be: Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) products this month, as people look for the new "look and feel" for their existing WinForms apps. Silverlight interest is growing, but there are few real products available as yet due to the status of Silverlight Betas etc. On the non-visual side - we continue to see demand grow for products that work with Reporting Services & SharePoint - with more and more products steadily being launched to meet this demand. Workflow Foundation (WF) products are continuing to emerge, as people look to grow their usage of business rules, workflow and activity based processes. Interest in 64 bit continues to grow on the server side for non-visual products. Away from .NET - interest in Eclipse based products and tools continues to grow and we are seeing a trend of commercial Java or Eclipse product editions, with more functionality or enhanced support, being made available alongside "free to use" non-commercial software. So that side of the market appears to be maturing commercially. As we await the new announcements at the Microsoft PDC - it will be interesting to see what new opportunities emerge for us all in 2009 and 2010. Don't miss out on the Reporting Services, SharePoint and Windows Workflow (WF) opportunities that are here right now, or the Eclipse market for dev tools - you can make money from these market sectors right now.
