Microsoft recently created a Case Study featuring ComponentSource on the subject of how to "Maximize Your Opportunity" to make money from the extensibility of Visual Studio for components, tools and add-ins. This is a timely reminder for us all that the market for third party custom controls or software components that are compatible with Visual Studio or the Microsoft .NET Framework does indeed represent a large commercial opportunity. So if you are thinking of creating new Silverlight controls for Windows Phone 7 or WPF compatible components for VS 2010 - there has arguably never been a better or bigger opportunity for you to make money from selling your components and tools to this commercial developer audience.
There were three additional Case Studies written about other component and tools product authors, creators or publishers. These included: "Capitalize on Partnership" with PreEmptive Solutions, "Ride the Innovation Wave" featuring ComponentOne and "Exploit the Power of the Platform" highlighting the success of DevExpress, our # 1 Award Winning Publisher for 2010-11.
You can read all the Case Studies on the Microsoft Web site using the link below to visit the campaign home page entitled "TURN EXTENSIBILITY INTO COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITY".

Many of you have written to me in the last few months asking what we think here at ComponentSource about the opportunity to make good sales revenues from new and emerging markets. The most common platforms we are asked about are: Silverlight, WPF, Windows Phone 7, iPhone & iPad, Android, SharePoint , SQL Server, MySQL, Eclipse etc. All of these market sectors represent a different challenge and hence opportunity. Some are new markets, with small sales and little competition...others are established markets, with large sales revenues and many potential customers, with lots of competitors vying for market share.
Don't forget about the established mature platforms and products you have already invested in! New emerging markets are exciting to read about, learn and work in and many of you have put extensive efforts into creating WPF & Silverlight editions of your products. However, please don't forget about updating and upgrading your WinForms and ASP.NET products. Customers are already using these products and they want upgrades to support the latest versions of Windows, SQL Server, Visual Studio, the latest browsers or the new look and feel of Office 2010 or they need 64 bit support.
As a good case in point Janus Systems recently revised their product range to give users the opportunity to style their apps to look like Office 2010, as well as adding compatibility with the latest Microsoft releases such as VS 2010 SP1. As a result of this new release the customers downloaded and upgraded to the latest version in large numbers and currently Janus WinForms Controls Suite lies in fifth (5th) place in our Bestselling products list.
