At the Tech Ed conference in Los Angeles earlier in May there were a series of announcements about Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 RC and SQL Server 2008 R2 - but the bigger news for many of us broke the week after Tech Ed, on May 18th, 2009 when the Beta 1 for Visual Studio 2010 and .NET FX 4 was announced in Somasegar's Weblog. Using the links below you can take a look at Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1 and download it, as well as getting a download of the Release Candidate for Windows 7. Plus you can register with Microsoft and be notified about the summer release of the Community Technology Preview (CTP) for SQL Server 2008 R2.

So a busy summer is ahead of us reviewing these new releases. There is an 11 page product overview document for Visual Studio 2010 that highlights the main focus of this release. Microsoft is highlighting support for cloud computing (Azure) and parallel processing to utilise multi-core computers - but there are some important changes to help developers use VS for SharePoint development, as well as for Web developers using Silverlight and ASP.NET MVC - with support for Windows 7 application creation. Plus VS 2010 uses WPF for the UI... so make sure you take a look.

With the economic conditions continuing to be tough worldwide there are some basic things we can all focus on to help boost sales. For example, if you are struggling with sales - this does not mean that you should delay a planned product release to wait for better market conditions - if anything it means that you should bring your planned product releases forward to help stimulate your sales. Even if it is a minor release that just fixes a few bugs or a major release that introduces new functionality - make sure you continue to release your new software regularly.

Why does this help your sales? When you make a new release - you announce it on your Web site and in your forums to your users. We also make similar announcements on our Web site and in our email newsletters in multiple languages to potential new customers. This helps boost Web traffic and interest in your product and this is much better than complete silence or no news at all. People will download your new release to see if it fixes their bug or if the new functionality makes it worthwhile for them to buy your product now. So please avoid the temptation to delay a planned release for another few months, as in the interim users may forget about you and your products or worse still assume you have some sort of issue that is preventing the release. The only people who will be happy to see you delay a release will be your competitors - who will take advantage of any slippage that you make.

Another idea to keep your customers happy is to publish a product road map that outlines your current release plans for the next few minor and major releases. This road map does not have to disclose all your top secret developments - but it should give an outline of the direction in which you plan to take your product. Such as we will have a WPF edition available in Q3/Q4 2009 and a Silverlight edition ready in Q1/Q2 2010. The product road map helps a potential customer understand your future plans and helps reassure them that you will be there to support them in this year and in the years ahead.

So to keep your product fresh in the minds of your customers and please make sure you don't delay your next release. Remember - ship regularly and if product quality and testing results permit - ship early!

We handed out our ComponentSource Awards to everyone at the show, but don't worry if you weren't there - the awards are on the way to you now.
