In our company we have been comparing several SCM and Plastic is easiest to use. Of course it supposes a great improvement with respect to Subversion or CVS.

Codice Software's Plastic SCM is a software configuration management tool that serves both small teams as well as large teams. As the Cadillac of SCMs, it scales to projects that have 250,000 files or more spanning thousands of directories. However, it is capable of merging the various branches of such large projects in as little as three minutes.

Plastic SCM supports SQL server, huge plus using SQL means we can turn over the management of the backend store to the DBAs...things such as configuring maintenance plans, managing the every x minutes tan log backups as well as the incremental, differential and full backups, consistency checks, along with monitoring and alerts and warnings if there may be problems at the database level. These are all very important. Using something like SVN would eliminate our ability to have all those features handed over to a dedicated team of highly skilled DBAs. SQL as a backend gives us a very robust, secure, and reliable storage mechanism for our source code without the team itself having to manage the backend.

I’ve been using Plastic SCM 3.0 for most of the last year and despite someone from the Plastic SCM team personally giving me demo (thank you!) I never got to the task of writing up what I thought about it. With the release of Plastic SCM 4.0 it is a good time to share some of my experiences.
