Prerequisites

DevSuite Database Server Requirements

The DevSuite Database Server accepts connections and stores data. TechExcel solutions run on the Microsoft platform. However, the database platform may run on any operating system that supports the SQL Server or Oracle platforms.

TechExcel recommends the Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Service Pack 3 database platform. Other supported DBMS include: Oracle 8 i+, MySQL 4.1+, Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server Express

TechExcel recommends the following when selecting your database:

If you are looking for a database server to work with DevTrack, and ease of use and maintenance is the top priority, choose Microsoft SQL Server 7.0, 2000 or above.  If you have already committed to other database servers, use the database currently supported by your company. If you are planning to use an Open Source database, TechExcel recommends MySQL. For others, TechExcel recommend Oracle.

DevSuite Web Services

The DevSuite Admin client requires that the DevSuite Web Service is installed and that the DevSuite Web Service runs the .NET Framework 2.0. The DevSuite Web Service must be installed and configured to run DevTrack and DevSpec. (DevPlan requires the installation of a separate service, the DevPlan Web Service.)

Five prerequisites must be met before installing the DevSuite Web Service.

  • Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) must be installed on the client machine.
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (version 2.0.50727.42) must be installed on the client machine.
  • The DevSuite Application Server must be accessible through the registry.
  • The DevSuite Web Service and the DevSuite Application Server must connect to the same database.
  • The database must use mixed mode authentication: Windows Authentication and SQL Server Authentication.

DevTrack Windows Client

The DevTrack Windows client is a fat client that talks to the DevSuite Application Server through a TCP/IP connection. Users must install the DevTrack Windows client on their local machine and periodically upgrade their client whenever there is an upgrade of the DevTrack system.

The DevTrack Windows client connects to the DevSuite Application Server to retrieve the database access information that enables it to log onto the DevSuite Database Server through an ODBC connection. Administrators must specify the DevSuite Application Server name or IP address and the port number when installing the DevTrack Window clients.

Requirements for the DevTrack Windows client

  • Operating System: Windows 2000 or XP
  • Disk Space: 250 MB of free space
  • RAM: 128 MB of RAM
  • Network: 100MB Ethernet or compatible

DevTrack Web Server and Web Clients

The DevTrack web client is a thin client that connects to the DevTrack Web Server over the Internet.

The DevTrack web client requires nothing more than a web browser. Using DevTrack does not require users to install any additional software on their local machine. All processing activities are performed by the DevTrack Web Server. DevTrack Web may be accessed using the following Web browsers.

  • Mozilla Firefox 1.0 and above
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 and above
  • Netscape Navigator 6.0 and above
