Java Servlet (Servlets)

What is a Java Servlet? A Java Servlet is a Java object or Java Class that allows a Java developer to insert content into JSP Web pages at run-time. The Servlet uses the Java Servlet API to enable it to reply to HTTP requests from a Web server and so can create Web page content on the fly or dynamically. Servlets are typically created by JavaServer Pages (JSPs) and run on the server, inside servlet containers provided by the Web application server, such as: BEA WebLogic, IBM WebSphere and Apache Tomcat, sometimes called a Tomcat Servlet.

The Java Servlet and Java Servlet API is part of the Java Platform Enterprise Edition (Java EE) and is used to extend the functionality of the server in a component based manner.

Using this type of Servlet request can be very useful for displaying data. Servlet examples include Servlets to display: charts, graphs, barcodes and images on a Web page and they can also be used for text and HTML editing or display, as well as to exchange XML data using between systems or apps using an XML Servlet.
