Vista-style Navigation for Windows Forms applications. By combining the compactness of a menu with the conciseness of a navigation path that's easy for users to remember, Infragistics WinNavigationBar takes a step ahead on the evolutionary ladder of navigation controls. Using breadcrumbs to find your way is not a new idea; the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel told of leaving a trail of breadcrumbs to avoid getting lost in the forest. It was in Microsoft's introduction of breadcrumb navigation to the Windows Vista UI for such devices as the Address Bar, that users discovered the intuitiveness and ease-of-use in such a user interface for getting around folder-oriented file systems. WinNavigationBar is the .NET breadcrumb control for Windows Forms application developers that want to mirror this increasingly popular Vista navigation experience.

WinNavigationBar is the more compact, concise, and capable alternative to a tree or menu when the following situations apply to your application:

  • Limited Space for a Navigation User Interface - WinNavigationBar takes up less space than a tree view, while at the same time giving the user the flexibility to back-up and drop down lists of alternatives from anywhere along its location path.
  • Users Need to Remember their Place - The navigation path identifying the user's current location can always be read on a single line, making it easier to remember or write down than a series of cascading menus or tree nodes.
  • Involves Data- or Process-oriented Navigation - You can use WinNavigationBar to guide users through both hierarchical data pertinent to your application domain, or to produce wizard-like user interfaces for business processes that may involve significant nesting and compartmentalization of steps and sub-steps as they are completed.

WinNavigationBar features at a glance:

  • Navigation Path - The entire sequence of steps that make up the user's current location is clearly visible on a single line.
  • Location Images - Each location can be associated with its own location image shown at the leftmost edge of the WinNavigationBar.
  • Drop Down Selection - Randomly access child locations using the implicit drop down button beside each location.
  • Return to Previous Locations - At the rightmost edge of the WinNavigationBar is a drop down history of previously visited locations.
  • Action Buttons - Much like a toolbar control, you can add functional buttons to the WinNavigationBar.
  • Editable Mode - Display switches into an editable navigation path, allowing the user to quickly reach a location by typing in its path.
