Search Lite ASP.NET DanielMettler [Switzerland] 25-May-2005 07:17:45

We've used other search systems, and now have a few questions

- Is it a spider / http-robot or a file crawler
- Does it handle other character sets like utf-8 correctly
- What DB does it use, can it use alternatives
- Does it properly index other documents like Word, PDF

Thank you for posting Daniel,

> - Is it a spider / http-robot or a file crawler

It includes a spider, which visits pages and documents to read links and build an index of your web-site/application as well as documents linked from there. That said, you could programmatically add to the index using your own file/directory crawler code. Our API allows you to do this.

> - Does it handle other character sets like utf-8 correctly

It currently handles Unicode/UTF8, we have released a pre-release that works with other char sets. We've tested and verified it on diverse languages such as Russian and Greek.

> - What DB does it use, can it use alternatives

It uses it's own file based indexes, which is partially in XML (if that's of use). We intend to release a 'Pro' version of this product in Summer 05 which will also work with MSSQL (and possibly other DBs in the future based on demand), and also have new features for categorization and multiple locations.

> - Does it properly index other documents like Word, PDF

It supports: Word 97-2003/XP, RTF, TXT, PDF, HTML [aspx, html, aspx, jsp...], and the API allows you to create your own parsers for other formats (eg. through the use of 3rd party parsers). Further, it does this without using the MS Indexing Service.

If I can help further or clarify anything please let me know.
