>>>The PDF module will not read most PDFs, will not append pages to the ones it can read (except under very, very specific circumstances) and then only makes PDFs that are giant raster images...they aren't searchable.
As with the TWAIN support any problems with PDF should be reported and verified by the technical support department. In particular if there are specific circumstances that are needed in order append PDF. If any of the circumstances exists they would be documented in help file. It is also very clearly mentioned that the PDFs that we currently create are Raster based PDFs. LEAD Technologies, in no way tries to hide this information. Full PDF support will be available in a future version of LEADTOOLS.
>>>Their support seems to think you're stupid for not knowing how to use the software and then sends you examples that do things that are not in the included documentation.
The support staff is there to help customer effectively use LEADTOOLS. If there is a problem with the support staff it should be immediately reported to us, use the feedback email address instead of support. LEADTOOLS has always had one of the best reputations for technical support, and we will continue to work very hard to make sure that we maintain this reputation. This is something that we take pride in and treat very seriously. Not all examples and solutions can make it into the documentation. Therefore, the support staff will try to provide specific examples when needed. Of course, providing free technical support has its challenges, and from time to time, customers will not be treated in the manner our standards require. If you were treated in an inappropriate way, we sincerely apologize and would like to hear the details.
Lastly, we thank you for the positive comments on our products. To create good quality software that is constantly updated and supported takes continuous investment. LEAD re-invests a large proportion of the license fees in R&D for our product range - so that you can use our software and knowledge under license for a fraction of the cost of developing it yourself. We are pleased that you like our software and we assure you that we will continue to invest and improve our products - including our TIFF support, in the coming months and years.

>>>The licensing is Draconian at best (you have to fax them a sheet of paper every quarter promising that you didn't install any new seat licenses even if you only bought a server license or they'll revoke all your licenses), and the product pricing is excessive, especially for the barcode extensions.
Approximately half of the LEADTOOLS products do not contain a deployment licensing component or any requirement to report any level of distribution or usage. Customers have used products such as the LEADTOOLS Raster Imaging, Raster Imaging Pro, Multimedia and Vector versions to ship and deploy millions of copies of their applications without a royalty payment or a reporting requirement.
It is true that we have several toolkits that require a run-time license, including the LEADTOOLS Document Imaging and Document Imaging Suite products, but we do not agree that the licensing is “Draconian”.
First, one must take into consideration that every LEADTOOLS customer probably has their own unique licensing requirements. We have attempted to create options that meet most requirements, but recognize that we need to deal with some licensing questions on a case by case basis. We do not require our customers to disclose the details concerning their project so in many cases, our customers do not interact with us at all concerning licensing, but simply prefer to sign the agreements. The reporting mechanism allows us to touch base with the developer on a periodic basis and works for many companies, who are either distributing a product commercially on an on going basis, or are deploying new copies internally on an on going basis. If a customer only needs a specified number of licenses, LEAD will, upon request, suspend the requirement for reporting. This is particularly appropriate for internal applications that will have a fixed number of users. In addition, in many cases, LEAD can offer a flat fee license arrangement where there is not a per user or reporting element. Lastly, in many cases, such as Barcode and PDF, LEAD has certain “pass-through” licensing requirements from third party vendors. We can certainly agree that our licensing is not always convenient for every customer situation. However, we generally try to be accommodating to customers requiring a change in the licensing.
Regarding the licensing pricing, we believe our license costs are competitive in every vertical segment (document, medical, PDF, barcode etc.) taking into account performance and other value criteria. Our resellers all have access to license pricing. In addition, the runtime license documents, with full pricing schedules, are contained in the evaluation versions help files so customers evaluating the products can review the license pricing as part of their evaluation process. We are considering the suggestion of having the runtime license options available on our website as well.
It is worth noting that having a model that to collect run time fees on certain high end technologies, has allowed LEAD to continue to grow our company’s technical resources, including product development, QA, technical support and product documentation. We believe that this reinvest back into LEAD’s products and customer services ultimately provides a better customer experience.

Thank you for you feedback. LEADTOOLS is always looking to get valuable comments from customers in order to improve our products. I will address each of your concerns below.
>>>Instructions are poor and incomplete, software behaviors are not well defined, usually the behaviors that are not intuitive.
After 14 years providing software development tools to programmers, we completely agree with you that product documentation is a critical element of our products. We understand that a programmer purchases LEADTOOLS to save time in the development cycle and we realize that if the documentation is not to the level that it should be, the customer will not gain the full benefit that our products should provide. I will say that LEAD has a long history of providing very good documentation, and I am confident that no other imaging toolkit company includes the depth of sample source code and tutorials, or the wide variety of development language documentation that LEAD provides. We also agree with you that our documentation can always be improved. We have recently increased the size of our product documentation team, and will look to concrete ways to make our online help, code samples and examples, as well as the tutorials better, and easier to use. We would like to invite you, or any of our customers, to contact us so that you can provide specifics as to the areas that you feel need the most improvement.
>>>It needs to be patched before the TWAIN support in .NET is even useable, and even then, it is arcane and difficult to deal with.
LEAD’s TWAIN support has always been a very solid and stable component of LEADTOOLS. However, if there is a problem with a particular portion of LEADTOOLS TWAIN, it should always be reported and verified by our Technical Support staff. Once it is verified, we can do an official incident report in order to solve the problem. LEAD strives to fix reported and verified incidents on a timely basis, especially in the case of a critical problem that will cause our customer a significant problem. If the TWAIN was not working, this should have been reported and fixed immediately. Technical support is free at LEAD, and we encourage our customers to take advantage of contacting our support personnel as necessary.

Instructions are poor and incomplete, software behaviors are not well defined, usually the behavoirs that are not intuitive. It needs to be patched before the TWAIN support in .NET is even useable, and even then, it is arcane and difficult to deal with.
The licensing is Draconian at best (you have to fax them a sheet of paper every quarter promising that you didn't install any new seat licenses even if you only bought a server license or they'll revoke all your licenses), and the product pricing is excessive, especially for the barcode extensions. The PDF module will not read most PDFs, will not append pages to the ones it can read (except under very, very specific circumstances) and then only makes PDFs that are giant raster images...they aren't searchable. Their support seems to think you're stupid for not knowing how to use the software and then sends you examples that do things that are not in the included documentation.
Also, the company does not disclose their runtime licensing prices until you call, which makes their advertised pricing somewhat deceptive (ex: USD 995 for the code to unlock barcode module, plus another USD 12,000 for a server licence, which you don't know about until you call, then they pester you every quarter about your seat licensing situation).
On the other hand, when dealing with raster images such as bitmaps, jpegs, tiffs and the like, the software is quick and feature-rich. If you need to roll your own version of Photoshop from the component up, this is the package for you. If you need to do document management and know that TIFFs suck when used on the web, look elsewhere.
