Features:
The ZipAddress Dynamic Link Library (DLL) provides a powerful and simple way for programmers to integrate the power of ZipAddress directly into their database or application running under Windows 95/NT. The programming involved will vary with the language you are using, but examples are provided which make it very easy for most popular languages and the principles illustrated will guide developers in other environments. If you are using one of the example languages, you can simply paste the bits of program into your own code, for immediate use! ZipAddress supports 32 bit Windows environments only (ie you will therefore require either Windows 95 or Windows NT). The ZipAdd.DLL file is installed into the Windows System directory (usually c:\windows\system on Windows 95 and c:\winnt\system32 in Windows NT) during ZipAddress installation.
Understanding USA Address Data
The best way to get a full understanding of USA addresses is to obtain a copy of 'Postal Addressing Standards' Publication 28 issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS). Another valuable source of information is the USPS Web site situated at http://www.usps.gov.
The ZipAddress DLL provides information on addresses by supplying 'Address Records', 'Zip Plus 4 Records' and 'City-State Records'. It is usual to have more than one Address Record for a Zip Plus 4 Record.
Overview
Implementing the use of the ZipAddress API typically requires the following steps:
1.Define the Data Types or Structures used to communicate with the library: examples of definitions are provided in the example programs for popular languages like C, Visual Basic and Access. If your language does not support Types, but can handle long strings, you may still be able to communicate with the DLL by using long strings, as all the structure 'fields' are of string type.
2.Declare the DLL Functions. Examples and prototypes of these are also provided, but the syntax may vary.
3.Incorporate all the power of ZipAddress right within your application! All the data lookups and searches from the main ZipAddress program can be carried out by the routines!
The best place to find the format of Data Type and Structure, or DLL function declarations for your own programming language is within the examples supplied.
