Silverlight Developer 18-May-2010Review:

Review refers to 2010.1 release.

Well, they look really nice.

Unfortunately they don't really hold up beyond the most basic dashboards style use.

Some elements can be extreme memory hogs (to the point of browser crash for not very controls), highly variable documentation (some is ok, other times you spend ages trying to get something to work, before you find the "way" you were meant to - which was not even remotely mentioned in the docs).

A distinct lack of completeness. Simple editors don't work as expected (can't type negative values into a double editor) - sometimes things just don't work for any visible reason and you need to try another way.

Support in the community forums seems to vary by component - with some perfectly reasonable questions going completely unanswered (and it's not as if there are a lot of questions - it looks to me as though most people have just given up) for some components - whereas others I would rate as being acceptable without being great.

As far as "paid for" support goes, while response time is good, it would appear you are dealing with someone quite removed from the dev team - and the most they can do in the end is raise a defect ticket

Also note the licensing is more restricted than some (3 prod servers only for web based stuff)

So ultimately, I was disappointed and wish I had purchased tools from a different vendor.

Response from ComponentArt
"We're certainly sorry to hear your experience with us hasn't been satisfactory. We do strive to do right by our customers and it's disappointing to hear we missed the mark with you.

In regards to support, our forums are primarily a venue for our community to communicate with one another, and while we do make every effort to participate in we don't guarantee a response there.

For direct support attached to licenses a response is guaranteed.

I'd like to clarify, too, that the support team does indeed have a direct line to the development staff at all times. In situations where a defect is discovered, the team is always alerted immediately, and the defect is entered into our tracking system and assigned an owner on the development team (although this step does not schedule the task or assign it a completion date).

In regards to the documentation, there is certainly room for improvement and we are taking steps to improve it with each release. If there are any specific entries that you feel are lacking please let us know so we can escalate their priority.

We hope this provides some clarity, and if we can do anything to help with your experience please contact us so we can discuss further.

Sincerely,
The ComponentArt Team"

We have actually been using ComponentArt's controls for a number of years, since before Silverlight, and they have always been rock solid. That was why we went to their Silverlight suite, and we were not disappointed.

We had a very large legacy ASP.NET application written with another library, and we upgraded it to a much enhanced application using Component Art's suite, in about a month. We got very resonsive and fast support from the ComponentArt developers, and all told it was a great development experience.

I definitely recommend it.

I've utilized Web.UI on a number of projects over the past couple of years. It's rock solid and its evolution continues to impress me.

The best feature of the control library, in my opinion, is the Client Side databinding capability combined with Web Service mode. This allows the rich functionality of the control to be utilized without having to post-back the page.

Next to that is the client-side javascript API itself, which is unrivaled in the third-party control world, and allows us to architect applications that can really be responsive to user input in much more creative ways, while keeping the server load and network traffic down.
