What’s new in AdminStudio V9.0?

“Pre-Conversion” Scan for application virtualization - AdminStudio saves packagers time and effort in determining what packages might be good candidates for virtualization. AdminStudio 9.0 includes a “pre-conversion scan” feature that intelligently reads a pre-existing MSI package, application file share directory or batch of application file share directories containing an organization’s existing MSI packages to determine which are viable virtualization candidates. This determination is based on application virtualization best practices established by Acresso with input from customers and industry virtualization leaders.

Repackager Refresh - AdminStudio’s Repackager functionality, which repackages and converts legacy setups to Windows Installer (MSI) formats, is now slightly redesigned. The change includes an enhancement in the capabilities: Repackager can now support MSI Capture, including context data for a more complete capture. Including the context data not only provides complete information to the packager for decision making, but it also more readily enables AdminStudio to be able to repackage applications that had been previously challenging, such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Reader. Seeing the complete context data is especially helpful when virtualizing existing vendor MSI packages.

Virtual Application Management - AdminStudio 9.0 builds on previous AdminStudio virtualization capabilities. In AdminStudio 9.0, the Software Repository, which in past versions had just stored MSI packages, is updated to now house virtual applications as well as traditional MSI data. Instead of spreadsheets, whiteboards or guesses that system administrators previously used to track the status of virtual and traditional applications for packaging teams, AdminStudio’s Software Repository now provides a single, clear GUI to display all of the information in one location.

Virtual Application Suiting - Previously virtual applications were isolated and no “talking” occurred. This was one of the limitations hindering a more widespread adoption of Application Virtualization - the fact that the isolated applications had a hard time working together (lack of interoperability). Although limited communication capabilities are now becoming more available from the leading virtualization vendors, AdminStudio 9.0 addresses the major market need and will now allow a packager to place several applications in a single container (location) to ensure that they are able to function properly within their end user’s environments. This will solve the isolated “interoperability” issue that most virtual applications have today. In allowing for this “suiting” capability, AdminStudio is addressing one of the most prevalent hurdles that has been slowing the adoption of application virtualization, regardless of the vendor technology.

Enhanced API Support & Conflict Solving API exposed in Workflow Manager - Enhanced API support in AdminStudio 9.0 allows customers to programmatically create application requests without having to go through the manual process each time. The enhanced API support means customers can more readily integrate AdminStudio into their internal helpdesk submission forms, such as those from their Remedy® or Peregrine® help desk systems, eliminating the tedious process of recreating or re-entering information and instead taking advantage of local solutions.

Exposing the Conflict Solving API from within Workflow Manager simplifies processes for customers. With the exposed API, entire processes can be managed within Workflow Manager as part of the application preparation process without having to go back into AdminStudio. This saves the packager time, bandwidth and energy in completing the intended task.

Repackager Support for Double Byte Character Systems - Properly presenting doublebyte characters, such as Japanese, Korean or Arabic, is becoming increasingly important to worldwide organizations and AdminStudio’s Asia-Pacific based customers. The AdminStudio Repackager is now enhanced to ensure that the Repackager will perform as desired in a double-byte character system.

Citrix 4.5.1 Virtualization Engine - With their acquisition of XenSource technology, Citrix enhanced the application virtualization engine in the product AdminStudio previously supported, which was named Citrix Presentation Server and is now named Citrix XenApp. AdminStudio 9.0 includes support for the latest version of the Citrix application virtualization engine, which is slightly redesigned from the previous Citrix release.

InstallShield 2009 functionality - AdminStudio 9.0 now includes the features of the InstallShield 2009 release, which is an integral part of the AdminStudio Editor, used to modify MSI for local customizations before repackaging.

Patch File Import Wizard -Previous editions of AdminStudio include Patch Impact Manager, functionality to help packagers test and manage Microsoft patches (that are released one Tuesday a month). When Microsoft released Windows Vista, they discontinued the previous XML patch format that had been supported by the AdminStudio Patch Impact Manager. With Vista, enterprises are still concerned about what type of impact a patch will have on their organization’s environment. With the new Import capability, they will be able to pull down the new patch (outside of AdminStudio), and import it into their catalog using the AdminStudio Wizard or a Command Line Interface. This ensures AdminStudio is still a valid and key tool for testing patches before they are deployed to the organization and keeps AdminStudio aligned with new Microsoft technology.

What’s new in AdminStudio V8.6?

Enterprise - AdminStudio 8.6 introduces a new tier for the product, aimed to support the market growth in virtualization. The AdminStudio Virtualization Pack contains the support for application packaging features for Citrix Presentation Server (4.5 Enterprise & Platinum editions) and Thinstall 3.2 Virtualization Suite. They are no longer available in the AdminStudio Enterprise Edition starting with AdminStudio 8.6. The AdminStudio Virtualization Pack is only available to customers who are already using Enterprise Edition or those who upgrade to Enterprise Edition. Silver maintenance is a requirement for purchase when the Virtualization Pack is purchased.

Enterprise, Professional and Standard - In previous releases, because the AdminStudio and InstallShield installations were merged together, you were unable to apply updates or hot fixes to InstallShield Editor. To obtain new InstallShield Editor features, you had to wait until the next AdminStudio release. In AdminStudio 8.6, the installation of InstallShield has been separated from the AdminStudio installation. Therefore, you now have the ability to install new InstallShield features and fixes as soon as they are available.
