Microsoft had several sessions at Tech Ed 2011 about Visual Studio LightSwitch - did you attend the sessions or watch the videos? Have you looked at LightSwitch yet? There have been 2 Beta releases in the last 11 months. If you have not looked at LightSwitch yet - you should! Why? Well because this could be a brand new market for you to reach with new products. Plus LightSwitch may well be used by a different sort of biz app developer - which means you have the opportunity to target new customers with your new software.

We highlighted the launch of LightSwitch back in our August 2010 Publisher Newsletter in our: "New technology areas to keep an eye on! LightSwitch - Did you see this new idea from Microsoft?" This was when it was first available as a Beta, then in our March 2011 Newsletter we mentioned that the latest release for LightSwitch was available as a Beta 2 - this was launched by Microsoft on Mar 16th 2011. There are some very good resources and introductory videos on MSDN for Visual Studio LightSwitch - go on - take a look today...

LightSwitch Resources on MSDN

If you looked at LightSwitch back in 2010 and didn't "get it" or dismissed it because you were too busy with other projects - I would suggest you look again - watch Beth Massi’s Tech Ed 2011 session on Extending LightSwitch on Channel 9 at MSDN and you will see some major changes and improvements between the launch Beta and Beta 2. More importantly Beth's session starts to reveal some of the hidden potential for LightSwitch to help a new class of biz app developer build business solutions fast for the desktop or for the cloud.

So is this all hype? Or are there products out there for LightSwitch already? There are several ways to extend LightSwitch and LightSwitch Extensions include: Controls, Screen Templates, Business Types, Themes, Shells & Custom Data Sources. So there are lots of ways for you to build a product that can be sold to a LightSwitch developer and yes there are some early products available now on the market. On June 15th we announced that DevExpress had launched XtraReports for LightSwitch - the first no doubt of many products that will extend LightSwitch to help make users build even better biz apps faster!
