IntelliJ IDEA Licensing

If you need to discuss your licensing requirements for IntelliJ IDEA, please contact our JetBrains licensing specialists.

We can supply IntelliJ IDEA commercial licenses including New Subscriptions, Subscription Renewals, Lapsed Subscription Renewals, and Additional Developer Licenses.

Starting from November 2, 2015, JetBrains has introduced a new subscription-based licensing model that has replaced the previous model, allowing you to purchase yearly subscriptions that includes all bug fix updates. The new licensing model also includes perpetual fallback license grants. When purchasing an annual subscription, you will immediately get a perpetual fallback license for the exact version available at the time of your purchase.

Commercial Annual Subscription - for legal entities, including companies and organizations (both for-profit and non-profit), requiring the software for general commercial use. A legal entity may use the software under the Business Subscription on any computer, operating system, and by any developer within a legal entity, provided that the total number of concurrent users never exceeds the number of subscriptions purchased by that legal entity.

Commercial Annual Subscription includes:

  • Free unlimited email access to technical support and online support resources for the period of the Business Subscription
  • Free generally available bug fix upgrades, minor releases and major releases for the licensed JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA edition for the period of the Business Subscription
  • Available to any legal entity (companies and organizations, including non-profit and government)
  • The license is owned by the legal entity, not by an individual
  • Non-transferable restriction: Use of the software is restricted to the legal entity with no right to transfer. Companies and organizations can only transfer their licenses between employees and contractors
  • The licensed purpose of use is general commercial usage
  • Multi-user license - the total number of concurrent software users cannot exceed the number of purchased subscriptions
  • The license term is time-limited, based on yearly subscription payments
  • Perpetual fallback license: Your license is NOT perpetual. The new licensing model includes perpetual fallback license grants. Perpetual fallback license is a license that allows you to use a specific version of the software after your Business Subscription expires. The specific version of the software that you can fallback to use when your Business Subscription expires will be the exact version available at the time of your purchase

FAQs

Is the license permanent (perpetual) or temporal (time-limited)?

IntelliJ IDEA is covered by a perpetual fallback license, which allows you to use a specific version of software without an active subscription for it. The license also includes all bugfix updates, more specifically in X.Y.Z version all Z releases are included.

When purchasing an annual subscription, you will immediately get a perpetual fallback license for the exact version available at the time.

What happens after my Subscription ends?

When the subscription expires, you are entitled to use the specific version of the software that was available when your subscription period started. You are no longer entitled to use any more recent updates which were released during the subscription period.

What is the difference between a Personal (Individual) Subscription and a Commercial (Business) Subscription?

A Commercial (Business) license is the standard licensing option for organizations and business entities. Licenses are purchased by the company and can be used by any single person within this organization.

A Personal (Individual) license is an option for private individuals who purchase a license with their own funds, and solely for their own use. Personal licenses are not available from ComponentSource, and may not to be purchased, refunded or in any way financed by companies.

Can I buy an old product version?

Purchasing a new IntelliJ IDEA license also entitles you to use previous versions of the same software. IntelliJ IDEA Subscriptions are backwards compatible and can be used with any previous versions that are still available for download. Versions released on Nov 2, 2015 and later can be activated with a JetBrains Account username and password or Activation Code. Versions released before Nov 2, 2015 can be activated with a Legacy License Key which can be obtained from JetBrains Support.

Can a license be transferred from one developer to another?

Yes. Licenses may be transferred between developers within the same organization. The person responsible for handling licenses can assign and revoke licenses from within their JetBrains Account.
