Data Dynamics Reports is awesome! There are a number of good developer-focused reporting libraries on the market. There are also a number of good self-service BI tools on the market. But suppose you need to create a "pixel-perfect" PDF report...such as for an order confirmation, or a product summary, or _______. Most self-service BI solutions aren't focused on this sort of report design. Now suppose that you need to be able to programatically generate a report from within an application on a regular basis...such as to automatically send an order confirmation, or_____. Most Self-service BI solutions aren't set up for programatic generation of a report that results in the rendered report being passed back to the calling application. This situation tends to demand a developer-focused reporting library. But if you go down this path, the developer needs to be involved in report creation and even report formatting. How can you have excellent programatic control of pixel-perfect report generation, but give the user the ability to create and format reports? This is a scenario that Data Dynamics Reports can handle like no other! RDL (Report Definition Language) is the quasi-standard reporting language embraced by Microsoft for SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services). RDL has a number of things going for it: 1) Can produce beautiful pixel-perfect reports, 2) Uses simple, well-documented XML-based markup for report definition, 3) Used by Microsoft in SSRS, 4) Visual Studio can create RDL reports, 5) Microsoft offers a free stand-alone Report Designer, 6) Can be used stand-alone, on a server, or integrated in an application, 7) Datasource and Dataset definitions can be included within the RDL file, 8) Can render to PDF, HTML, Word, et al. Data Dynamics Reports includes a .NET assembly that can render RDL reports, as well as a .NET assembly report designer, as well as a executable report designer. This opens up lots of possibilities. One of these is that the developer can create a rough report--including datasource and dataset definitions, that can be modified and previewed in the stand-alone report designer. Then the developer can provide this to a user, and the user can modify, format, polish, etc. Then the final RDL can be stored where it is accessible by the application--and the application can then use this definition to programatically generate reports. Conceptually, Microsoft (or other) tools can be used to design the report in lieu of the Data Dynamics Reports designer. In practice this is pattern is limited by the fact that a) Data Dynamics Reports provides some enhancements to "generic" RDL (that can't be used with other designers), and b) Data Dynamics Reports currently uses the SQL 2005 version of RDL...which is different and incompatible with later versions of RDL.

The best of both worlds. quick and easy development with flexible page layout while still providing for complex requirements... the combinations beats all others in this market - and the performance is awesome.
