ComponentSpace Trace Route Component is a .NET class library that adds Internet route tracing capabilities to Windows and web applications. Developers can initiate trace operations, measure hop timings, and capture router addresses along a network path. The library supports event driven notifications and both synchronous and asynchronous tracing methods.

Internet Route Tracing Functionality

Provides classes that perform traceroute style network diagnostics within .NET applications. The library traces the path packets take to a destination host and reports information about each hop, allowing developers to inspect network topology and identify delays along the route.

TraceRouteClient Class For Trace Operations

Includes the TraceRouteClient class that initiates route tracing operations. Applications call its methods to start a trace, configure parameters such as hop limits, and collect results describing each router encountered between the source system and the target server.

Configurable Hop Count And Timeouts

Developers can control how route tracing is performed by specifying parameters such as the maximum number of hops and request timeouts. These settings allow applications to adapt trace operations for different network environments and diagnostic requirements.

Optional Address Resolution

Supports resolving Internet addresses to host names during tracing. Applications may choose whether router IP addresses should be translated into DNS names, allowing trace results to present either raw addresses or readable server names.

Synchronous And Asynchronous Execution

Trace operations may run synchronously using the TraceRoute method or asynchronously using BeginTraceRoute and EndTraceRoute. This flexibility allows applications to block until completion or run network diagnostics without interrupting the main execution flow.

Event Driven Trace Progress Notifications

The component uses an event driven architecture that notifies applications when significant tracing stages occur. Events indicate when route timing completes, when each hop finishes processing, and when the entire trace operation has completed.

Detailed Hop Timing And TTL Data

For every hop in the network path, the component performs multiple timing measurements and reports the results through events. These results include round trip timings and Time To Live (TTL) information that help analyze network latency and routing behavior.

Structured Trace Results Collection

After tracing completes, the full route information is returned as a collection of TraceRouteHop objects. Each object represents a hop and includes details such as router address, optional host name, hop number, and recorded timing results.

Exception Based Error Handling

All operational errors are reported using a dedicated TraceRouteException class that follows standard .NET exception patterns. This approach enables applications to handle network or execution issues using familiar try catch mechanisms within their diagnostic or monitoring logic.
